Hi and Welcome to SAFD!

Our Motto: “We learn how, share the knowledge and then give it away.”

We are the Society for the Advancement of Floral Design, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization who promotes the study and enjoyment of floral design through volunteerism, educational programs and community involvement. Our members range in experience from the novice designer to floral shop owners and Texas Master Florists.

Membership – Our membership dues are now $40 a year and we meet from September to May. Dues will be $25.00 for Students under 24 currently enrolled in classes. Starting in September 2018 we will only meet every other month.  Watch for Newsletters emailed to current members for information or check the Calendar.  New members are welcome to attend the first meeting for free.

Meetings – SAFD hosts a meeting every other month on the third Tuesday of the month, September to May. Our meetings are held at the Cypress Creek Christian Church and Community Center located at 6823 Cypresswood Dr., Spring , TX 77379. Our meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. with a social and snacks followed by the general meeting and speaker at 7 p.m. Our speakers are local floral designers who share their ideas and tips with us. Occasionally, we will have hands on workshops to allow our members an opportunity to learn different floral design techniques. Many of our workshops are lead by our own talented members! We also may have special meetings offsite to visit various wholesalers and event planners.

Community Affairs – SAFD actively participates in community affairs in the local area. We provide floral arrangements to local hospice centers and nursing homes among other recipients. We meet at least 3 times a year to create these arrangements. Our members learn new techniques while providing an arrangement for charity. A win win for everyone! We also provide floral centerpieces for galas hosted by local charities. These arrangements are provided free of charge to these organizations. Our community affairs activities are an important part of our organization.

Table Top Gala – The Tabletop Extravaganza is our major fundraiser of the year. It is usually held in April. The proceeds of this event are used to pay for the floral arrangements we create for our community affairs recipients, and other charitable events. Some of our gala recipients have been MADD, TOMAGWA, NAM, Foundry UM-Judy Dierker Classic, ADVA(Domestic Violence Abuse Advocates) and CASA in Northwest Houston. In addition to providing these centerpieces, SAFD also sponsors scholarships geared for training or continuing education for floral students. See our Scholarships section for more information.

The annual gala is truly a spectacular event for all to see – About twenty tables will be on display with every breathtaking tabletop theme you could ever imagine. We usually have in attendance over 200 people each year who look forward to this gala with much anticipation. Some of the guests have attended for several years, while others might be there for the first time. The gorgeous tabletops are created by SAFD members, professional florists and designers, and floral school students and teachers. Each tabletop will be photographed and showcased before all attendees sit down to a plated dinner. During dinner each designer will have an opportunity to talk about their table.

We also have a silent auction and raffle with an array of fun items. Tickets in the past have been $55.00 each, and each table seats 10 people. The table designer receives a free ticket. Tickets will be on sale at our March meeting, or you can call the Table Top Chair for ticket information.

Scholarships – SAFD also provides scholarships to students and adults who wish to pursue a career in floral design, would like to attend continuing education classes or attend convention. SAFD gives scholarships for applicants pursuing various levels of education in the floral industry. Scholarships were available for:

Books, tuition or board at a 2 or 4 year accredited school for a graduating high school senior pursuing an education in horticulture, landscaping, or floriculture;

Books, tuition or board at a 2 year accredited Texas Community College or Floral Design School for a graduating high school senior or a college student pursuing a major in horticulture, landscaping, or floriculture;

Books, tuition or board at a 2 year accredited Texas Community College or Floral Design School with a major in horticulture, landscaping or floriculture, for an adult changing careers or a student wanting to complete their Texas Master Florist Certification in order to pursue a career to the floral industry;

Funds used to defray the costs of travel, hotel and classes for an applicant seeking to attend the Texas State Florists’ Association Convention in order to receive further certification;

Funds to attend the Texas Certified Florist Program.

SAFD also offers a scholarship to our members. The scholarships are valued at $400.00 to be used toward floral design continuing education. Applications for the scholarship are due in April. You also need to know which class(es) you are planning to attend. An announcement will be made in the spring and in the newsletter to let you know when to apply.

The scholarship award is based on a point system and is also on the honor system. You can receive points for volunteering for community affairs, serving on the board, bringing refreshments, organizing and hosting a hands on workshop, attending bus trips and bringing new members to join. Bus Trips – SAFD tries to plan at least two bus trips a year. It is a great opportunity to see new places and get to know other members. These trips are based on the availability of the Harris County Precinct buses. Trips in the past have included a tour of our buying power vendors, Brookwood, Florescence, Ima Hogg Plantation, tour of the Heritage Society homes in downtown Houston just to mention a few. The buses leave from the parking lot next to the Cy Creek Community Center. The times and dates of any future bus trips will be announced at the meetings. Buying Power

As a member of SAFD, you are able to shop at the following vendors and take advantage of the discounts and wholesale pricing and the ability to purchase fresh flowers. You may be required to show your SAFD membership card when purchasing. When asked the name of your shop, tell the shop owner you are a member of SAFD. A list of vendors is available to you when you join. MEMBERS MUST PAY SALES TAX when shopping at any of the vendors.
